Our History

_________________________________________________

In March 2016,  Marylou Schirmer and Kate Mattiace purchased the Citizen News with the determination to keep local journalism and hometown news thriving in the towns of New Fairfield and Sherman. Under their new title, the Town Tribune, the staff members and new partners worked diligently to ensure the survival of the newspaper. Within months, they moved the newspaper from paste up into digital production, and within 6 months launched the paper’s first ever local news website. Ms. Schirmer and Ms. Mattiace work cohesively alongside each other as Advertising Director and Editor, respectively, to put out the weekly newspaper they have grown to respect and love over the years.

The Town Tribune is a newspaper that serves our community members and supports our local organizations through its print media. It is delivered free, weekly to all residents of New Fairfield and Sherman and is available to out of town readers through subscription.

While passionate about my position as Advertising Director and Co-publisher of the Town Tribune, I am also a wife, mother of two, and New Fairfield resident for over 22 years. I feel blessed to be part of such a giving community, and am very grateful for the wonderful group of friends I’ve made over the years. Prior to owning the Town Tribune, I worked as Advertising Director and Editorial Coordinator at the Citizen News for 18 years. I was born and raised in Westchester County, NY and attended Westchester Community College, where I continued to study business while working for a local publishing company. After working five years at a private law firm, I accepted a position in the Legal Department at Texaco, Inc. Headquarters in Purchase, NY, where I managed the legal support staff for both the corporate and litigation teams. The hobbies I enjoy most are Italian cooking and my recent introduction to Yoga!

Community is something we sought when we began looking for our family home five years ago and that is exactly what we found here in New Fairfield. After graduating from Manhattanville College in 2004 with a B.A. in English, I worked in Manhattan in various positions – inside sales at a software company, administrative assistant at an architecture firm, sales assistant at a high end magazine. It was only when I came to the newspaper that I knew I had found what I was looking for –a position doing something I love that also serves a greater purpose.  I began working at the Citizen News first as a reporter, then as Associate Editor before purchasing the paper in March 2016. In addition to working as the Town Tribune’s Editor, I am also a mother of four young boys who attend various schools in the New Fairfield School District. My family keeps me extremely busy and incredibly happy. I am blessed to be surrounded by so much love – for my business, my family, and my community.
