At their regular meeting on Wednesday, September 11, New Fairfield’s Zoning Commission approved a site plan for a firearm retail and light firearm assembly business at 3 Rte 39 Unit 8. When questions arose about the type of business they were considering, members were reminded that it is not in the purview of the Zoning Commission to consider the business type as a factor. They need only be concerned with wheth er all departments have approved and proper permit paperwork is in place. If they did not consider this as a neutral business, it could be seen as discrimination based on a business bias. The approval of this site plan is contingent on the Health Department’s sign off that there are no adverse issues with septic or water use.
Owner Mr. Travis Picci explained that the business is primarily a rifle company, “basically, we have parts manufactured for us from outside sources. They are shipped in and we assemble them.” He went on to say, “We are more of a boutique company, we pretty much do about 50 firearms a year total for comp lete firearms.” He explained that there will be a small retail area as well. The business’s license also allows for ammunition sales.
Picci stated that the space will meet all require ments for security—the security system will be networked into the local police department. Measures such as motion sensors, glass breaks, and door sensors will all be in place. He noted, “if anybody were to even open a window, it will set off the alarm, which will immediately notify local police.” In addition, Picci said all firearms are placed in a 90-minute fire-rated safe for the night.
Chair Mr. John Moran explained that he received a letter of resignation from Ms. Jane Landers, who has sat on Town Boards for nearly two decades, including the Boards of Finance and Education, on which she served as Chair. Landers explained that she and her husband are moving out of New Fairfield, and said, “It has been an honor and a privilege to serve with you and our amazing board.” She did write, “I wish I could leave on a positive note, I feel the state of Connecticut has developed a sustaining Home Rule and desire to destroy tranquility and beauty for a wonderful small town. I hope New Fairfield survives.”
The next regular Zoning Commission meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 9, 7:30 p.m.
