Sherman – It was business as usual for the Sherman Board of Selectman (“BOS” or “Board”) at their regular monthly meeting on Thursday, October 22 at Mallory Town Hall. The Board efficiently covered all agenda items, enjoying lively discussions on a few, including the location of and amenities in what will be the new senior center building. During public comments, resident Stan Greenbaum addressed the Board. Referring to a July memorandum from the Park and Recreation Commission (“Park & Rec”) regarding their desire to be involved in the process, Mr. Greenbaum’s comments opened the door for discussion on the matter. Kris Fazzone added, reminding the Board of Park & Rec’s request that the new senior building include an outdoor restroom and water access for gardens. First Selectman Don Lowe reminded the audience that the program and square footage are largely set based on a six-year planning process. “Our Building Committee’s job is to build the building we have been talking about for six years,” Mr. Lowe said. Selectman Bob Ostrosky added, the “Committee has made its decision [not to include Park & Rec’s request] and we’re executing the program.” He encouraged Park & Rec to work with Suzette Berger, coordinator of the Senior Center.
Christine Campbell and Dana Vargo were appointed as commissioners to the Conservation Commission for a term ending in 2030. The First Selectman said he interviewed both “outstanding women” and felt they were “well qualified” for the position.
Town Business Manager Liz La Via reported that all three Town audits are complete. As requested at the last BOS meeting, Ms. La Via provided the Board with an updated Capital Plan. The Annual Town meeting, rescheduled from the 17th, was scheduled for Saturday, October 24 at Charter Hall, at which Mr. Lowe expected to discuss the Town’s Capital Plan in more detail.
There was no monthly report for the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department (“SVFD”). Mr. Lowe joked that he excused SVFD Chief Chris Fuchs this month considering his upcoming nuptials. The First Selectman noted that he would officiate the Chief’s wedding on Friday, October 23.
Public Works (“PW”) Supervisor Kris Fazzone summarized the department’s efforts for the Board. Work on Anderson Road was scheduled to commence on October 26. A tree located at Hobart Cemetery requires removal and Mr. Fazzone advised a public hearing will be necessary. PW has received multiple compliments on the soccer field. They have received $48,000 from the sale of items sold through govbid.com, an online auction to sell items owned by the Town, the use of which was approved at the August Board meeting. Lastly, a motion passed to bring to a Town Meeting the request for an amount not to exceed $110,000 for the purchase of a 2027 F600 truck.
The Board discussed the idea of painting the steeple at the Sherman Playhouse. With approval of the Board, Mr. Lowe will proceed with obtaining quotes.
Other items discussed included road resurfacing; small roads will fall under the PW’s budget. There is no estimate yet associated with the cost of a new server for the Town. The deadline for completion of the school allowing staff and students to move in was pushed back to February, as noted earlier this month at the Board of Education meeting. Mr. Lowe advised that contracts for the Sherman Senior Center Building are “nearly signed.” The Town awaits an OK from its insurers. The Board still awaits a third quote for Mallory Town Hall security. To close, discussion ensued regarding boat dock slips, following the annual lottery earlier in the month. There were 62 eligible residents for the 57 slips, leaving 5 on a waitlist. Selectman Joel Bruzinski suggested a weighted lottery system for residents who serve the town, to which Mr. Ostrosky said, “I think that is an interesting thing to digest.” Town Treasurer Andrea Maloney suggested having five slips auctioned off, which would bring in more revenue for the Town. It was agreed by the Board that these ideas are for Park & Rec to discuss.
The Board approved its 2027 monthly meeting dates as well as the 2027 Holiday calendar/Town schedule. The Community Halloween Bash was scheduled for October 24. Early voting continues through November 1.
The next Board of Selectman’s meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 19 at 7:00 pm. The Senior Center Building Committee plans to meet on Tuesday, November 10 at 7:00 pm in Mallory Town Hall.
