NF Community Clean-Up and Smart Bin Launch
April 30, 2026By Sarah Opdahl
It’s time for New Fairfield Parks & Recreation Department’s annual Sip & Stroll, and this year has an exciting shift in theme: Mardi Gras in May. The lively event is planned for Saturday, May 16, 2:30 to 7:30 p.m., and includes lots of fun new twists.
“Glasses are selling quickly,” Parks & Recreation Director Ms. Linda Lull shared, “residents (21 & up) are encouraged not to wait to make their purchase – glasses are limited.” Though the event is always popular with residents, this year may have a particular draw with a Mardi Gras-themed parade planned.
At 2:30 p.m., a Bourbon Street-style parade will commence and surely delight the amassed spectators. “We’ve always wanted to host a Mardi Gras parade and with February’s unpredictable weather, moving the celebration to May felt like the perfect opportunity,” Lull said. “‘Mardi Gras in May’ brings a vibrant, festive energy to New Fairfield and pairs perfectly with the Sip & Stroll.” The parade will feature the Tenpenny Dixieland Band, Anne Cubberly’s Giant Puppets, the New Fairfield Fire Department, Time to Party, the New Fairfield Senior Center, and many others who will delight in bringing the spirit of New Orleans to New Fairfield. Anyone interested in joining the Mardi Gras parade is welcome—just call the Parks & Recreation office at 203-312-5633.
In addition to the parade, business owners throughout the Sip & Stroll route are leaning into the new theme. Overall, more than two dozen businesses and organizations are participating as stroll stops and are “all helping to create the spirit of the Big Easy,” Lull commented. Those with Sip & Stroll glasses—essentially your ticket (see purchase information below)—will find that “While specific offerings may vary by location, many stops will feature snacks and sips for participants to enjoy.” This year’s event will also include raffle tickets available for purchase at $5 each with prizes generously donated by Icons, Dessert Works, Liv Aesthetics, and Omakase.
Parks & Recreation staff encourage paradegoers and stroller participants to dress in Mardi Gras attire – think purple, green, gold, feathers, and sequins. “We are looking forward to seeing residents join in the fun, view the parade, and purchase a glass. All proceeds from this event go directly into our self-sustaining fund for community improvements.”
How can you purchase a glass? (Yes, they are Mardi Gras-themed as well.) You can easily pre-register for glasses, $30 each; or $35/glass on the day of the event. Cash or credit cards are accepted; you must be 21+ to participate – ID required. On the day of the event, strollers will pick up their glass and map from New Fairfield Town Hall. With no set order to the stops after the parade, participants can choose the direction they would like to follow. Pick up your glass and map at Town Hall (4 Brush Hill Rd.) between 4:00 – 6:00 pm and Sip & Stroll from 4:00 – 7:30 pm.
Come to the Mardi Gras In May Sip & Stroll and be ready for a cool experience…laissez les bons temps rouler!
