The Friends of the New Fairfield Free Public Library had a busy month of events in June, hosting a series of craft sessions as part of New Fairfield’s 250th celebrations. Separate events involved children and adults, who were delighted to take part and get into the spirit of Independence Day.
Friends of the Library Member Anne Marie Manz explained, “Since the library is a community hub, we were happy that our programs contributed to the Town’s celebration.” She went on, “America’s 250th Anniversary inspired the Friends to brainstorm some programs that would help the community celebrate. Our member, Cathy McKenna, is a Daughter of the American Revolution and offered to present programs on Corn Husk Dolls and Tin Punching. We thought this would be a great opportunity to include children in the celebration.”
Manz shared, “In addition, we hosted patriotic cookie decorating and rock painting. Kelly’s Sweet Rewards [based in Brookfield] did a fantastic job instructing adult patrons on how to decorate cookies for their July 4th festivities.” For the whole family, there was a painting rocks craft, which were added to Snakespeare, a structure outside of the library, and leveled up the July 4th whimsy.
“The children were enthusiastic and attentive as they learned how to make these Colonial Crafts,” Manz said, going on to say, “Many home schooled families were appreciative for the fun addition to their curriculum.”
The Friends of the Library often host “Crafting with Friends” programs for adults. We are always looking for inspiration! Some of our upcoming events include:
* Crafting with Friends – Creative Cards (7/30) and Easy Origami Boxes (8/20)
* Book Sale in September
* Third annual Local Authors Meet and Greet (10/17)
* Fifth annual Murder Mystery (11/7)
* Third annual Holiday Boutique (11/28)
Manz explained that residents are welcome to join the Friends at an upcoming meeting at the library! Meetings are the second Thursday of each month, alternating mornings and evenings. The next meeting is July 9th at 6:00 p.m.
