Beyond Books: New Fairfield Free Library Earns Statewide Honor for Children’s Services

For five decades, Gil’s Auto and Truck Repair, at 7 Route 37 in the center of New Fairfield, has served as a trusted shop for automotive needs, from the most basic maintenance to extremely complicated car issues. For owner Thomas Hicks the occasion is particularly meaningful, as he grew up and has spent his adulthood immersed in day-to-day life at Gil’s.
“Fifty years and three generations is quite an accomplishment,” Hicks reflected, saying, “Throughout my 40‑plus years working next to my father — and now having my son Tyler working next to me — it feels incredible. It is something I am proud of every single day.” Gil’s is operated by a team of five — one service advisor and four mechanical specialists. Hicks explained that two of them live in New Fairfield but “every member of the team is dedicated to serving this community with the same honesty and care we are known for. We work closely together, and each person brings their own strengths to the shop, which is a big part of why we have been able to keep this business going strong for 50 years.”
Hicks is grateful for the generations of staff who have worked at Gil’s, “I could not operate this type of business without the people I have.” Of his current staff he said, “I am lucky to have a team that works hard every day to keep our customers’ vehicles running and stopping safely on the road.”
Gil’s has modernized along with the town over the years, Hicks says, “As the town has grown, we have grown with it, always adapting while staying true to the values we started with.” He continued, “The things that have stayed the same over the past 50 years are our reliable repairs, honesty, and integrity. Caring for the safety of every customer has always been our top priority. We have always taken pride in providing a personal touch with every service we perform.” Gil’s has changed over time, of course, with the growth of their building, the removal of the old gas pumps, and—most importantly—keeping up with the technology on today’s complex vehicles.
The available services run the gamut at Gil’s, including any manufacturer-recommended maintenance and a full range of mechanical repairs. They service tires, brakes, air conditioning systems, and any emissions issues. Hicks also takes pride in working on classic and antique cars, “something I have always enjoyed. We make sure every vehicle gets the attention and care it deserves.”
To commemorate a half century in business, Hicks shared that he is having special 50‑year T‑shirts and sweatshirts made for their customers and the community. The generosity is continuing to flow: “I am also planning a series of specials throughout the summer, fall, and end of the year as a way to say thank you to everyone who has supported us over the decades,” he said.
Hicks is overjoyed with the town’s support: “The best thing about owning an automotive business is the people. Every day I get to help someone — whether it is keeping their family safe on the road, solving a problem they have been worried about, or just giving them honest advice they can trust. There is a real satisfaction in knowing the work we do matters,” he shared. “I also love the relationships that build over time. Customers become friends, and in a small town like ours, that personal connection means everything. Being able to carry on this work alongside my father for so many years, and now with my son by my side, makes it even more meaningful. It is more than a business — it is a family legacy.”
Reminiscent about the past but excited to continue into the future, Hicks observed, “Three generations working under the same roof is something rare,” and he is very proud that the business is still growing strong fifty years later.
