December 6, 2024NF Housing Opportunities Committee Plans for Upcoming Open House with the NF Housing Trust

At their Wednesday, December 4 meeting, New Fairfield’s Zoning Commission discussed the current moratorium on cannabis sales in Town and whether to possibly end or extend it. However, the matter shifted to whether to enact a total ban on cannabis sales, which some area towns have done. There will be a public hearing and possible vote at their January 8 meeting. Members agreed that having the Town’s legal counsel weigh in on the issue befor e, and perhaps during, the meeting would be wise.
The idea of a ban, rather than a moratorium, was initiated in public comment by members of New Fairfield Together in Wellness (formerly the New Fairfield Prevention Council) who spoke in favor of it. They also offered to send additional information to commission members before the public hearing next month. Far more discussion is expected among the members in January. Chair Mr. John Moran noted, even if a ban were initiated, there is still always the possibility of a business requesting the Town to lift the ban.
Commission members accepted the special permit application for modification to the original proposed grading following the demolition of the Consolidated School. The hope is to alter the grading plan in order to reduce the amount of pricey fill material that would need to be imported. The site was b id as a “balanced” one, which would mean little to no fill would be required. The grading plans needed to be modified in order to accomplish this.
An application for a revised special permit for the installation of a crosswalk at the high school’s exit on Gillotti Road was also accepted. The original plan for the crosswalk was in a different location, whereas the new site was requested by the school to follow the natural path the students are using.
There was a tense dis cussion during the enforcements portion of the meeting regarding the purview of the Z oning office versus the Buildings office in terms of what may or may not be deemed infractions. There was some confusion about what the regulations are and what constitutes an offense, with Zoning Enforcement Officer Mr. Evan White clarifying matters.
The next regular Zoning Commission meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 8, 7:30 p.m.
